Urgent Search Continues for Two Missing Swimmers After Christmas Swim

UPDATE: Search efforts are ongoing for two men missing since a frigid Christmas Day swim in Budleigh Salterton, Devon. Emergency services responded urgently at 10:25 AM after reports of swimmers in distress, with operations suspended by 5 PM due to hazardous weather conditions.

Authorities confirm that the two missing swimmers, aged in their 40s and 60s, were participating in an informal wild swimming event when they encountered difficulties. Multiple emergency teams, including coastguard and RNLI units, were deployed but have since stood down as darkness falls.

According to Devon and Cornwall Police, relatives of the missing men have been kept informed of developments. One local resident described the waves as “almost 10ft,” highlighting the treacherous conditions that contributed to the incident.

“Today, emergency services have been responding to a truly tragic incident in Budleigh Salterton. Our thoughts remain firmly with the families and friends of the two men who are currently missing,” stated Detective Superintendent Hayley Costar.

The annual Christmas swim, once an organized charity event, has transformed into a more casual gathering in recent years. A yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office for the South West prompted many planned swims to be canceled, with police now urging caution against sea swimming.

Emergency crews, including HM Coastguard rescue teams from Exmouth and Beer, along with RNLI lifeboats, conducted extensive shoreline and offshore searches. Helicopters and a fixed-wing aircraft also participated in the rescue efforts. Despite their tireless work, the coastguard confirmed that the search was officially concluded for the day at 5 PM.

Although no official weather warnings are in place for Boxing Day, police are maintaining their cautionary stance. Detective Superintendent Costar emphasized, “While there are no official warnings in place for tomorrow, we urge anyone with plans to go swimming in the sea on Boxing Day not to.”

The South Western Ambulance Service reported being alerted at 10:10 AM and confirmed one individual was transported to NHS Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, while others received treatment on-site.

The local community is rallying together, sending thoughts and prayers to the families affected by this tragic event. As search operations have paused for the evening, many are left hoping for a safe resolution.
