UPDATE: The Freeman Hospital’s Children’s Heart Unit in Newcastle has undergone an urgent transformation, making Clinic E a more welcoming space for young patients and their families. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (Chuf) and Newcastle Hospitals Charity, the clinic is now equipped with vibrant artwork, interactive screens, and child-friendly features that aim to ease anxiety for patients.
The renovations were made possible through generous charity funding and are expected to significantly enhance the experience for children receiving cardiothoracic outpatient services. The project was designed with input from hospital staff, patients, and families, ensuring that the changes meet the needs of those who rely on the clinic.
“In creating a brighter and more calming space, we are transforming the experience of families during some of their most anxious moments,” said Charlotte Campbell, director of fundraising and operations at Chuf. “We’re incredibly proud to have partnered with Newcastle Hospitals Charity and the Clinic E team to bring this vision to life.”
The newly refurbished clinic features interactive screens in waiting areas and smart TVs in scanning rooms, designed to distract and relax young patients during their visits. A sensory-friendly room has also been created, intentionally kept screen-free to support children with additional needs.
Victoria Byrom, a mother whose son benefited from Chuf’s support and who now works for the charity, expressed her enthusiasm about the improvements, stating how “amazing” the revamped space is for families. Her sentiment reflects the collective hope that this transformation will positively impact the emotional well-being of children and their caregivers during treatment.
Kelly Belmont, charity programmes and partnerships manager at Newcastle Hospitals Charity, emphasized the collaborative spirit that made this project possible. “This project is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when charities and hospital teams work together. The improvements will make a real difference to the experience of families visiting the clinic for years to come,” she stated.
Both charities are actively seeking more support to continue funding vital NHS services that exceed standard provisions. They encourage local businesses to consider partnering with them to enhance care for young patients at the Freeman Hospital.
As this exciting development unfolds, families and supporters are urged to stay informed about ongoing improvements and how they can contribute to future initiatives.
