Urgent Repairs to Historic Upleatham Bridge Set for Six Weeks

UPDATE: Major repairs to the historic Upleatham Bridge in Upleatham, East Cleveland, are set to begin on November 10, 2023, following multiple collisions that have left the bridge with significant damage. This urgent work, approved by local councillors, will last approximately six weeks and is expected to conclude by Christmas 2023.

The Grade II listed structure, which spans Skelton Beck, has sustained severe damage, with a 150mm gap reported between the road surface and the parapet wall. An inspection commissioned by Redcar and Cleveland Council revealed multiple cracks, prompting immediate action to safeguard this historic asset.

Repairs will involve carefully removing a dislodged section of the bridge and re-erecting it using original stones wherever possible. If any replacement stone is required, it will be matched to the existing sandstone style, ensuring the integrity of the bridge’s historic appearance is maintained.

Authorities emphasize that additional minor repairs will also be conducted, such as re-pointing masonry using mortar compatible with the bridge’s heritage. Furthermore, the carriageway on the approaches will be improved with new traffic signage, reflective road studs, and surface-mounted bollards—all aimed at enhancing road safety in this high-traffic area.

As a precaution during repairs, the bridge will be fully closed, and a signed diversion route will guide traffic via Apple Orchard Bank and Marske Lane. This closure is crucial to ensure both public safety and the preservation of the bridge’s historic fabric.

The need for repairs stems from numerous instances of vehicle collisions, particularly due to the bridge’s narrow width, which makes it difficult for two vehicles to pass safely. Current traffic measures have been deemed inadequate, prompting the council to implement new signage and safety protocols.

A council officer stated that these plans not only aim to preserve the bridge’s historical significance but also align with planning policies in the local plan. Built in 1755 and widened in the early to mid-19th century, the bridge is a key landmark in the region, and its preservation is vital for local heritage.

Community members are encouraged to stay informed about the progress of the repairs and to share this urgent update widely. The impending improvements are a step towards not just preserving history, but also ensuring the safety of all who travel through this busy area.
