UPDATE: A proposal for five to eight new homes adjacent to Beech House Nursing Home in Wollerton, near Market Drayton, has just been submitted to Shropshire Council. This application, which was filed earlier this month, seeks permission in principle to assess the site’s suitability for development.
The proposed site, currently used for grazing horses, spans one acre off Mill Road. According to documents submitted by Whitchurch-based Peter Richards & Co, the Council indicated earlier this year that the area is “considered to be acceptable” for development.
A spokesperson from Peter Richards & Co stated, “This site’s central location within the village makes the current use inefficient. A modest infill development would effectively utilize the land.” They further emphasized that the project would boost local services by increasing the resident population without straining existing infrastructure.
However, community concerns are rising as local residents voice their objections during the consultation phase. Mrs. Westwood expressed her worries: “Wollerton is a small rural hamlet with narrow roads and pavements unsuitable for additional traffic. The proposed development would significantly increase vehicle movements, creating safety risks for pedestrians, horse riders, and cyclists.”
Another resident, Mrs. Matthews, echoed these sentiments, questioning the need for additional housing in an area lacking immediate services. She remarked, “The environmental impact on this rural hamlet would far outweigh the need.”
The application is set to be determined in the coming weeks, and local residents are urged to stay informed through Shropshire Council’s online planning portal using reference number: 25/04551/PIP.
As community discussion intensifies, the outcome of this proposal could have a significant impact on Wollerton’s future. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to share their views as the situation develops. Stay tuned for updates on this pressing issue affecting the local community.
