UPDATE: An inquest has confirmed that a lethal mix of cocaine, ketamine, and alcohol led to the death of 24-year-old Chloe Ferris, found unresponsive in the bathroom of a Belfast nightclub. The hearing at Laganside Court revealed shocking details about the tragic events that unfolded on December 1, 2025, during a night out to celebrate her birthday.
Chloe was discovered in a toilet stall at Lux nightclub on Dunbar Street early Sunday morning. Friends reported that the group had been drinking together before moving to a bar in Belfast City Centre, where Chloe purchased cocaine using a friend’s phone, reportedly out of embarrassment. This decision was characterized as “out of character” for her, although she had acquired the drug before.
At approximately 1:17 AM, CCTV footage captured Chloe and a friend entering the bathroom. Staff grew concerned after the door remained closed for nearly half an hour. When they checked, they found both women unconscious inside. Emergency services were alerted around 1:55 AM, with rapid responses from the fire and ambulance services.
Paramedics struggled to revive Chloe, who was positioned on her knees with her head towards the door, indicating she had fallen in a dangerous manner. Her friend regained consciousness, but Chloe’s pulse was absent, and she was pronounced dead shortly after.
The inquest revealed that Chloe’s blood alcohol level was 107 mg per litre, above the legal driving limit of 80 mg per litre, but not excessively high. However, the combination of drugs created a “lethal cocktail,” significantly increasing the risks associated with her condition. Coroner Joe McCrisken indicated that Chloe likely ingested cocaine mixed with ketamine unknowingly.
The coroner emphasized that Chloe’s position during the incident contributed to her death by asphyxiation. He expressed agreement with a statement from Chloe’s father, Declan Ferris, who described drug use as “playing Russian roulette” with one’s life. He warned that many will take similar risks in the coming weeks, underscoring the urgent need for awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol combinations.
The investigation remains active as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with substance use, especially among young people seeking to celebrate life.
