Urgent: Four-Year-Old Receives Life-Saving Kidney from Mother

UPDATE: A four-year-old girl has received a life-saving kidney transplant from her mother, a development that brings hope to many families. The surgery, performed in Belgrade just two days ago, was successful, confirming that the kidney began functioning immediately.

Officials from the NGO “Hrabro u novi život”, including spokesperson Irena Čabarkapa, announced the news, highlighting the girl’s previous struggles with dialysis while awaiting this critical procedure. “She is feeling well,” Čabarkapa stated, expressing relief and joy for the family.

The NGO organized a poignant event titled “Guardian – Anđeo čuvar” in a shopping center in Podgorica to celebrate organ donors and raise awareness about the importance of transplantation. The performance featured angel wings adorned with the message: “Heroes do not always wear capes,” symbolizing the selfless act of organ donation.

Čabarkapa emphasized the emotional impact of organ donation, stating, “A donor does not just save lives; they restore smiles and hope for families.” She noted the presence of families, healthcare professionals, and children awaiting transplants during the event, underscoring community support in the fight for patient rights.

Currently, 113 patients are on the waiting list for transplants in Montenegro, including five children. Among them, 75 are waiting for kidneys, 20 for livers, and 13 for lungs. The situation remains critical, as urgent action is needed to address the backlog.

In a recent agreement, healthcare authorities in Montenegro have partnered with a clinic in Belarus, allowing patients to undergo transplants at the state’s expense after protests highlighted the need for immediate action. Previously, patients faced costs of up to 60,000 EUR for procedures, which many could not afford.

Čabarkapa, who has been on dialysis for over a decade, acknowledged that 14 patients have successfully undergone transplants in Belarus, with more awaiting their turn. “We must continue to advocate for a system that prioritizes patient care,” she said.

The NGO is committed to raising awareness about organ donation, stating that “one decision can save multiple lives.” They aim to reach more individuals to create a culture of generosity and support within the community.

As the situation develops, the public is encouraged to participate in awareness campaigns and consider becoming organ donors. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated; it is a life-or-death issue for many families.
