Urgent Fire Breaks Out Aboard Freight Ship at Cammell Laird

UPDATE: A significant fire erupted aboard a freight ship under construction at Cammell Laird in Tranmere on the evening of December 9, prompting an urgent response from emergency services. The Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) received the call just before 8:23 PM and arrived on the scene within six minutes.

Firefighters quickly deployed six fire engines to combat the blaze, which led to the immediate evacuation of all personnel on-site. As firefighters worked alongside shipyard supervisors to establish water supplies, specialized teams equipped with breathing apparatus were sent into the vessel to locate the fire’s source.

The complex internal structure of the ship posed challenges, necessitating the use of marine firefighting hoses. By 9:57 PM, firefighters successfully extinguished the fire, allowing for a controlled scaling down of operations. The final MFRS crews departed the scene at 10:37 PM, with no injuries reported among the evacuated personnel.

A spokesperson from MFRS confirmed the incident, stating, “Crews were alerted at 20:23 and on scene at 20:29 with a total of six fire engines and specialist equipment vehicles. All personnel were evacuated as a precaution.”

This incident underscores the critical safety measures in place at Cammell Laird and highlights the rapid response capabilities of local fire services. Residents and workers in the area are reminded to stay clear of the site while investigations continue.
