United Airlines to Receive First Premium Boeing 787-9 in February

UPDATE: United Airlines is set to welcome its first premium-heavy Boeing 787-9 aircraft, designated N61101, as early as February 2026. This significant development was confirmed by airline officials to its pilots, with the aircraft’s entry into service aimed for March. This new addition marks a pivotal expansion in United’s fleet and enhances its competitive edge in the premium travel market.

The Boeing 787-9 N61101 will stand out not only for its advanced features but also for a special livery celebrating United’s upcoming 100th anniversary in 2026. This aircraft is the inaugural member of United’s new “78L” subfleet, which will include 33 aircraft in total, each designed to prioritize passenger comfort with a reduced capacity of just 222 seats.

Why does this matter? The 78L configuration is specially designed for routes with high premium demand, offering a more spacious layout compared to the existing 787-9s, which seat 257 passengers. The new setup includes 64 Polaris Suites, 35 Premium Plus seats, and 123 economy seats, making it one of the least dense 787-9 configurations globally. This strategic move aligns with United’s efforts to provide enhanced service on high-demand routes such as San Francisco to Singapore and London-Heathrow.

Inside the 78L aircraft, travelers can expect upgraded amenities, including the new “Elevated Interiors” featuring the Elevate Ascent for Polaris. These seats will provide direct aisle access, privacy doors, and larger screens of 19 inches (48.26 centimeters). The introduction of the front-row “Polaris Studio” seats is particularly noteworthy, designed for enhanced comfort and privacy.

United’s current 787-9s, which began operations with Polaris cabins in 2016, will see significant improvements in technology and comfort with this new introduction.
