URGENT UPDATE: Turkish police have just launched a dramatic crackdown on organized crime, arresting 38 members of the notorious ‘flatbread mafia’ in Mersin. The operation, executed on Monday, targeted the Barıs Turgut Organised Crime Group, which allegedly attempted to monopolize the local flatbread market through threats and violence.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that out of the 38 suspects detained, 17 have been formally arrested, while 19 others are under judicial control. Ongoing proceedings are in place for the remaining individuals. This unprecedented move highlights the Turkish government’s intensified efforts to combat organized crime, particularly in light of recent attacks against local businesses.
During the raids, authorities seized 23 vehicles, along with 85 bank accounts linked to illicit activities. The gang reportedly engaged in fraudulent transactions totaling 10.76 billion lira (approximately $358.7 million) over the past five years. Minister Yerlikaya stated that the gang resorted to violence, including two aggravated assaults and 10 shooting attacks targeting businesses and individuals in the flatbread industry.
“This operation underscores our commitment to eradicate organized crime, no matter the target,” Yerlikaya declared. The police also confiscated weapons during the operation, including one long-barreled firearm, five unlicensed handguns, and one unlicensed hunting rifle.
The crackdown comes amid a broader campaign by Ankara to address organized crime, which has seen a troubling rise in attacks linked to motorbike gunmen. The unprecedented focus on a gang involved in the flatbread market marks a significant shift in strategy.
As this situation continues to unfold, the public and local business owners are urged to stay vigilant. The crackdown against the ‘flatbread mafia’ is just the beginning as Turkish authorities ramp up their efforts to secure the streets and protect community businesses. Further updates are expected in the coming days as investigations proceed.
