Taxi Driver Sentenced After Cyclist Left with Serious Injuries

UPDATE: A taxi driver has been sentenced after crashing into a cyclist, leaving her with a broken spine and elbow. The incident occurred in the early hours of April 5, 2023, on a main road in Cramlington, Northumberland, raising urgent concerns about road safety for cyclists.

Garry Anderson, 59, admitted to causing serious injury by careless driving, having momentarily lost concentration before striking the cyclist, who was equipped with yellow reflective gear and flashing lights. Despite these safety measures, Anderson failed to see her while driving on the A1068 Fisher Lane.

The victim, who had set out at 4:30 AM to cycle from Gosforth to Lynemouth, has little memory of the crash, only recalling waking up in an ambulance. She was initially taken to a local hospital and later transferred to the major trauma unit at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for extensive injuries, including fractures.

At South East Northumberland Magistrates’ Court, Anderson was fined £200, ordered to pay £85 in costs, and received a 12-month license suspension. Prosecutor Paul Anderson emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stating, “She was struck by a vehicle and has little recollection of what happened thereafter.”

Anderson, a seasoned taxi driver with over 30 years of experience, expressed remorse during the hearing. His defense attorney highlighted the challenges of the accident’s location, where the road transitions from dual to single carriageway and lacks street lighting.

Chairing magistrate Win Clayton stated, “This was a terrible event for all concerned,” while acknowledging Anderson’s immediate call for emergency help. The victim did not express any ill feelings towards him, further complicating the emotional weight of the case.

As road safety continues to be a pressing issue, this incident serves as a stark reminder for drivers to remain vigilant, especially in low-visibility conditions. Authorities urge all road users to prioritize safety to prevent future tragedies.
