Suzy Bennett Celebrates Dartmoor’s Artisan Crafts in New Book

UPDATE: Award-winning journalist and photographer Suzy Bennett has just released her highly anticipated book, Artisans of Dartmoor, showcasing the vibrant craft community in Dartmoor. This urgent new release highlights the incredible talents of local artisans, including blacksmith Greg Abel, who works in a stunning, atmospheric forge.

Bennett’s journey into the heart of Dartmoor’s craft scene began nearly two decades ago when she was seeking a local blacksmith for a curtain rail. This serendipitous encounter ignited her passion for documenting traditional crafts and led to the creation of the Dartmoor Artisan Trail, a community project that invites visitors to explore the workshops of local artisans.

With the cultural movement for traditional crafts gaining momentum, Bennett felt compelled to document the artisans she met along the way. “I could see this cultural movement happening right on my doorstep,” she explained. Her project blossomed, eventually culminating in a book that features over 40 artisans, reflecting a thriving craft community amid concerns about the decline of traditional skills.

Bennett, who shifted her focus from global travel writing to local storytelling due to climate awareness, emphasizes the mental health benefits of craftsmanship. “Working with our hands taps into a part of the brain that nothing else reaches,” she stated. Her photography captures the intimate and rugged beauty of Dartmoor’s craftspeople, showcasing their dedication and passion.

This book release comes on the heels of Bennett’s invitation to speak at the Bovey Tracey Craft Festival in June 2024, where she plans to further promote the importance of local crafts. “I cancelled my entire social life to complete this project,” she remarked, highlighting her commitment to celebrating the artisans of Dartmoor.

Bennett’s photography process is as intricate as the crafts she documents. She faced unique challenges, such as low light and tight spaces, while striving for authenticity in her images. “I love gloomy flat light; it creates soft shadows and suits Dartmoor,” she noted.

The book is available now, and readers can discover more about the Dartmoor Artisan Trail and order the book through www.dartmoor-artisan-trail.co.uk. Bennett’s work promises to inspire and engage anyone interested in the rich tapestry of traditional crafts and the human stories behind them.
