UPDATE: The breathtaking Horseshoe Pass in Denbighshire, Wales, is creating a buzz as one of the most scenic winter driving routes, just one hour from Liverpool. Adventurous motorists are invited to experience this stunning serpentine A-road, which showcases spectacular valley views.
With winter officially here, the A542 route is drawing attention for its mesmerizing vistas, elevating drivers to a height of 417 metres (1,367 feet). Nestled between Llantysilio Mountain and Marilyn Cyrn-y-Brain, the pass is popular with both motorcyclists and sightseers eager to enjoy the picturesque landscapes.
The Horseshoe Pass, known in Welsh as Bwlch yr Oernant (pass of the cold stream), has a rich history dating back to 1811. According to the heritage site Llangollen.co.uk, it was once a steep route described in 1808 as “prodigiously steep and continues so for a mile and a half.”
Despite the closure of the beloved Ponderosa Café—a cherished pit stop for travelers since its establishment in the 1950s—the route remains a must-visit destination. The café shut its doors in November 2024 for routine maintenance, but the owners announced in March that it would not reopen, expressing heartfelt gratitude to loyal customers and the biking community.
The café has now been listed for sale, with hopes that a buyer will restore this significant landmark. “It is with a heavy heart we announce that the Ponderosa shall not be re-opening at this present moment in time,” posted owners Simon and Sam Clemence on Facebook. “A big heartfelt thank you goes out to the biking community for their unflinching support over the years.”
While the café’s closure is disappointing, several stopping points along the pass remain accessible for visitors to enjoy lunch amid stunning natural surroundings. Motorists are encouraged to check the weather forecast before embarking on their journey, as the pass can occasionally close due to adverse conditions.
The Horseshoe Pass not only provides a scenic drive but also opens opportunities to explore nearby attractions, such as the charming town of Llangollen with its vintage steam railway, and Ruthin, nestled in the hills with independent shops and local culture.
With its stunning views and rich history, the Horseshoe Pass continues to be an essential winter destination for those seeking adventure and breathtaking scenery. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to explore one of the UK’s most picturesque routes!
