UPDATE: Severe flooding has struck parts of the UK following the devastating impact of Storm Claudia. Widespread flooding has led to the declaration of a major incident in Monmouth, South Wales, with emergency services urging residents to avoid the area as conditions remain perilous.
Emergency crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue reported significant flooding in Monmouth early this morning, prompting urgent calls for public safety. Area manager Matt Jones stated, “This is a large-scale incident,” urging residents to stay clear of Monmouth to allow emergency services to assist those in need.
As of 6 AM today, Natural Resources Wales issued four severe flood warnings, indicating a “significant risk to life.” Water levels are reported to be over three feet deep in some areas, and the flooding has caused power outages across parts of Ireland.
Heavy rain is expected to continue across much of Wales and England today, with forecasts predicting up to 150mm of rain in higher elevations. The Environment Agency has issued over 90 flood warnings, signaling that flooding is imminent in numerous locations.
In a shocking report, 81.8mm of rain was recorded in Gwent, marking over 60% of the monthly average for November. The Met Office has warned that conditions will worsen as more rain and cold weather sweep in, potentially bringing snow and sleet to northern areas by Sunday.
The situation remains dire, with widespread disruptions reported across transport networks. National Rail has cautioned passengers that travel may be severely impacted due to the storm.
“If you are in immediate danger with a threat to life or property, or need urgent assistance, please call 999,”
Jones emphasized.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant as water levels may continue to rise due to ongoing rainfall. Hazardous travel conditions are expected across affected regions, with additional warnings in counties such as Dublin, Wexford, and Wicklow in Ireland, which are currently under orange rain warnings.
As the storm begins to recede, the UK faces a cold snap from the Arctic, with temperatures set to drop significantly into next week. The UK Health Security Agency has already issued cold weather warnings for parts of the Midlands and northern England starting Monday.
The impacts of Storm Claudia are felt across communities already grappling with flooding and power outages. Residents are urged to stay informed and prepared for significant disruptions in the coming days as conditions develop.
Stay tuned for updates as this situation continues to unfold.
