Stockport Hospital Imposes Visitor Restrictions Due to Norovirus Surge

The Stockport NHS Foundation Trust in Greater Manchester has implemented urgent visitor restrictions at Stepping Hill Hospital following a significant outbreak of norovirus, commonly referred to as the winter vomiting bug. This action comes as the hospital grapples with a “very high” number of norovirus cases across its wards, prompting the need to prioritize patient safety.

Effective immediately, the trust has suspended all patient visits, allowing only limited exceptions. These exceptions include visitors for patients receiving end-of-life care or those with dementia or learning difficulties. The trust indicated that this decision will be reviewed on February 20, 2024, and further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.

In an official statement, the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust acknowledged the impact of this decision on families and patients. “We usually offer open visiting for those who wish to spend time with their loved ones,” the trust stated, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. “However, because of the increasing risk from norovirus to our vulnerable patients, and pressures on our services, unfortunately we are having to put visiting restrictions in place.”

This outbreak follows similar measures enacted by the Royal Bolton Hospital just days earlier, where open visiting hours were also halted due to infection control concerns. The Stockport NHS Foundation Trust emphasized that the safety and well-being of patients remain paramount.

To combat the spread of norovirus, the hospital is rolling out additional safeguards. These include intensified cleaning protocols in affected areas, increased monitoring for new cases, and enhanced laboratory screening to quickly identify and isolate affected patients.

The trust urged families of patients whose well-being may be negatively impacted by these restrictions, such as those with dementia or neurodiverse conditions, to communicate with ward staff in advance to discuss visitation options.

“We are currently suspending all visiting to patients,” the statement continued. “We will be reviewing these measures on a regular basis and will lift any restrictions when it is safe to do so. Thank you for your continued patience and support.”

As the situation develops, the trust remains committed to ensuring that visiting can continue safely for as many individuals as possible while addressing the challenges posed by the ongoing outbreak.
