BREAKING: Sir Jim Ratcliffe has hailed Michael Carrick’s impressive performance as interim head coach of Manchester United, but left fans in suspense about his future. Ratcliffe, in Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix, confirmed that Carrick is doing an “excellent job” but did not commit to making him the permanent manager.
Since taking the helm after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, Carrick has led the team to six wins out of eight matches. However, the question of whether he will be appointed permanently looms large as the season approaches its conclusion.
When asked if Carrick will secure the job if results continue to improve, Ratcliffe playfully replied, “I’m not going there.” He emphasized that the team is focused on qualifying for next season’s Champions League, stating, “Clearly we’re thinking about that but there’s still seven or eight games to go.”
Currently, Manchester United sits on 51 points, tied with Aston Villa, trailing only Manchester City and Arsenal in the league table. As they prepare to face Villa, who are struggling with form, the stakes are high. A victory against a European rival could bolster Carrick’s case for a permanent position.
Despite a relatively healthy squad, Carrick faces some injury challenges. Lisandro Martinez, Patrick Dorgu, and Matthijs de Ligt are sidelined, but he revealed that Mason Mount is on the mend. “Mason is back with the group, which is fantastic,” Carrick said. “He’s not 100 percent, but he’s back, and that’s good for us.”
In a recent episode of BBC’s The Wayne Rooney Show, former player Michael Owen expressed disbelief that Carrick’s role is even in question. He argued, “Manchester United have waited about 12 years… and the one time they are starting to play well, get results, the fans are on board – you’re telling me at the end of the season if he gets third [place] they will say ‘thanks, but no thanks’?”
With the tension mounting and only a handful of games left, all eyes will be on Manchester United’s performance and Carrick’s potential future at the club.
