Brian, a beloved figure in Sheffield, dedicated 59 years of his life to the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Department, where he was honored as the longest-serving member. His passing leaves a significant void in the community he proudly served for decades, known for his unwavering commitment and steady presence.
Born on May 5, 1941, in Sharon, Connecticut, Brian was the son of Ronald and Edna Ovitt and step-son to Edwin Mansir. He worked various jobs, including at Freund’s Farm and Pfizer, before establishing his own successful painting contracting business. His contributions extended beyond work; he was a passionate community member who enjoyed numerous hobbies, including hunting, bowling, and coaching Little League.
Brian’s family shared that he cherished his time spent with his wife of 64 years, Alice (Ward) Ovitt, and their children—Felecie, Michael, and Travis. He also enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox and took pride in raising golden retrievers with Alice. His loyal dog, Shelby, was rarely far from his side.
The family invites community members to honor Brian’s memory at a funeral service on February 21, 2026, at 11 a.m., at the Birches-Roy Funeral Home, located at 33 South Street in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Calling hours will take place on February 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to either the Sheffield Volunteer Hose Co. #1 or East Mountain Hospice House. Donations can be mailed in care of the funeral home.
