Rory McIlroy Withdraws from Arnold Palmer Invitational Due to Injury

Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational due to back spasms, which he experienced shortly before the start of his third round at Bay Hill. The Northern Irish golfer was positioned at four under par and tied for ninth place when he made the decision to step back from the competition after feeling discomfort that persisted despite a warm-up on the driving range.

In a statement, McIlroy detailed his experience, stating, “While warming up in the gym this morning, I felt a small twinge in my back. As I started hitting balls on the range before the round, it worsened and developed into muscle spasms in my lower back. Unfortunately, I’m not able to continue and have to withdraw. I was excited to compete this weekend. I wish the Arnold Palmer Invitational a great finish and look forward to being back next year.”

The withdrawal comes as McIlroy prepares to defend his title at the Players Championship, set to take place next week at Sawgrass. This is a critical period for the 36-year-old, who has previously dealt with significant back issues, most notably in 2023 during his recovery that allowed him to earn four points for Europe in their Ryder Cup victory in Rome.

McIlroy’s decision marks only the second time in his PGA Tour career that he has withdrawn mid-competition, the first instance being in 2013 at the Cognizant Classic at the Palm Beaches. In his initial rounds at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, McIlroy recorded scores of 72 and 68, including five birdies in his second round, showcasing his competitive spirit before the injury setback.

As McIlroy looks ahead to his upcoming commitments, fans and fellow competitors alike will be hoping for a swift recovery and a return to form for one of golf’s leading figures.
