BREAKING NEWS: Riyadh Air has just achieved a major milestone with its first Boeing 787-9 successfully completing its inaugural test flight in Charleston, South Carolina, today, December 23, 2023. This is a pivotal moment for the newly launched airline, marking significant progress towards operational readiness as it aims to reshape air travel in Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East.
The aircraft, designated as test flight B1, underwent rigorous evaluations led by Boeing test pilots, ensuring its airworthiness before being officially delivered to Riyadh Air. This comprehensive testing is critical for meeting manufacturer-led certification standards, a necessary step before the airline can begin its scheduled operations.
Riyadh Air is on track to redefine travel connectivity, planning to operate up to 100 destinations by the end of the decade, including major hubs like London Heathrow and Dubai International Airport. As part of the Kingdom’s vision for economic diversification, the airline is projected to contribute $20 billion in non-oil GDP growth and create over 200,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The test flight today represents a crucial phase in Riyadh Air’s journey, as officials stress the airline’s commitment to premium travel experiences and exceptional service. A spokesperson for the airline stated,
“This milestone reflects our steady progress toward operational readiness and demonstrates our ambition to revolutionize air travel in the region.”
Launched in 2023 under the Kingdom’s Public Investment Fund, Riyadh Air is poised to become the second flag carrier for Saudi Arabia, following Saudia. Initially, the airline will operate with one leased Boeing 787-9 from Oman Air, which will serve as a training and technical support aircraft until the full fleet of 182 aircraft—including Airbus A321neo and A350-1000—arrives.
In addition to enhancing connectivity, Riyadh Air is set to implement cutting-edge features onboard, including next-generation in-flight entertainment systems and improved connectivity options, aiming to provide a world-class travel experience infused with authentic Saudi hospitality.
As the airline prepares for its first commercial flight in the first quarter of 2025, it has already established partnerships with major airline alliances, including SkyTeam and Star Alliance, creating pathways for seamless travel across the globe.
Stay tuned for more updates as Riyadh Air embarks on this exciting journey, promising to transform how travelers experience air travel to and from the Kingdom.
