The float, displayed by St. Joseph Catholic School on October 31, 2025, showcased the infamous phrase “Arbeit Macht Frei,” translating to “Work Makes You Free,” a slogan historically linked to the horrors of the Holocaust.
Local residents reacted with shock and anger when video footage of the float circulated on social media, prompting swift responses from the Diocese of Harrisburg. Bishop Timothy C. Senior issued an urgent apology, stating he was “shocked and appalled” upon seeing the imagery. He emphasized that the original float design did not include the Auschwitz replica, calling its inclusion “profoundly offensive and unacceptable.”
“The inclusion of this image represents the horrific suffering and murder of millions of innocent people, including six million Jews during the Holocaust,” Bishop Senior stated. He extended his heartfelt apologies to the Jewish community and anyone hurt by this display, reinforcing the Church’s commitment to combating antisemitism and promoting unity.
The controversy arose as the float was pulled by a vehicle from Metcalf Clearing, which also apologized for its involvement, clarifying that it had no role in the float’s design. The company acknowledged it should have reviewed the decorations more carefully.
Designer Galen S. Shelley claimed he had no ill intent, stating that he was unaware of the phrase’s significance. Originally aiming to create a somber entrance to a cemetery, Shelley explained that the Auschwitz gate was added due to a shipping delay with his initial design. “I never intended anything to be like this. I couldn’t have anticipated it. I made a mistake and I ask everyone’s forgiveness,” he told reporters.
The Diocese of Harrisburg is now reviewing its approval processes for future events and plans to collaborate with the Pennsylvania Jewish Coalition and the Anti-Defamation League to provide educational resources about the Holocaust.
