URGENT UPDATE: Stargazers across Scotland are in for a spectacular treat tonight as the Aurora Borealis may light up the skies amid a powerful geomagnetic storm. Reports confirm that enhanced geomagnetic activity, stemming from up to two Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), is expected to continue through Saturday, offering a rare opportunity for stunning aurora displays.
The best chances to witness this natural phenomenon will be in northern Scotland, although parts of Northern England and Northern Ireland may also catch glimpses. There’s even a slight possibility of visibility reaching as far south as Wales and the Midlands. The Space Weather Update suggests that geomagnetic activity could persist into Sunday and possibly into early next week, though conditions for visibility may vary.
Meteorologist Jo Farrow from STV News warns that the weather will play a crucial role tonight. “There will be clear skies tonight with a chance of seeing the aurora,” she reported. Early evening will see low clouds over the far north of Scotland, including the Northern Isles. However, much of mainland Scotland can expect clear, calm, and chilly conditions.
As the evening progresses, conditions could shift. “By late evening, rain will arrive for Caithness and Orkney, reducing the chances of clear skies there,” Farrow added. Before midnight, a frontal band will move in from the southwest, likely bringing more clouds to Dumfries and Galloway and the Inner Hebrides.
The time window for optimal viewing is closing in. By the early hours, only northern and eastern parts of mainland Scotland are expected to have clear skies, but it will be chilly. It’s worth noting that the bright Supermoon, lingering three nights past its full phase, could also hinder visibility if the aurora makes an appearance.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to find spots away from city lights to increase their chances of catching this breathtaking display. The aurora could be visible in its full glory later this evening, provided conditions remain favorable.
As the potential for enhanced aurora activity continues in the days ahead, keep an eye on the skies and be prepared for an unforgettable spectacle. This is a moment not to be missed—share the excitement and let others know about the incredible opportunity to witness nature’s light show tonight!
