BREAKING: A new sculpture honoring Queen Elizabeth II will soon grace Birdcage Walk in central London as part of a national memorial. Acclaimed sculptor Karen Newman has been officially appointed to create the tribute, aiming to capture the Queen’s “strong and complex personality” in her design.
This announcement arrives as the nation prepares for a significant tribute to the late monarch, who passed away in September 2022. The sculpture will complement a larger statue by Martin Jennings that overlooks The Mall, near Buckingham Palace. Jennings confirmed that his design will depict the Queen standing, consistent with the traditions of the House of Windsor.
Newman expressed her excitement about the project, stating, “It is a huge honour to be asked to contribute my work to the memorial for Queen Elizabeth II. The memorial site, designed by Lord Foster, will also feature a statue of Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh. Originally planned for a different location, the statue will now be positioned near Marlborough Gate, symbolizing the deep partnership shared by the Queen and Philip throughout her reign.
Newman is well-known for her previous works, including depictions of notable figures at Madame Tussauds, such as Stevie Wonder and Yoko Ono. Her bronze memorial of British secret agent Noor Inayat Khan stands in London, showcasing her talent in capturing historical figures with dignity and depth.
As part of the broader memorial plans, the final designs will be unveiled in April 2024, coinciding with what would have been the Queen’s 100th birthday. The memorial will include a “family of gardens” through St James’s Park, offering peace and reflection for visitors.
