Most Israelis Disillusioned with Democracy Amid Trust Crisis

UPDATE: A new survey from the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) reveals a significant disillusionment among Israelis regarding their democracy, with trust in government institutions at an all-time low. The poll, conducted in May and November, indicates that only 25% of Jewish Israelis view the state of democracy as “good” or “excellent,” while just 12% of Arab Israelis share this sentiment.

This alarming trend underscores a growing crisis of confidence in the Israeli government, with the survey showing that public trust in various institutions fluctuates between 10% and 41%. The Israel Defense Force stands as the only trusted institution among Jewish respondents, with 81% expressing confidence in the military.

The statistics reveal a stark divide in perception, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s government garners trust from only 25% of Jewish Israelis and 17% of Arab Israelis. Netanyahu, currently embroiled in three corruption trials, has announced plans to seek another term, adding to the controversy surrounding his leadership.

Further compounding these issues, the survey indicates that only 35% of all respondents feel they can rely on the state “in times of trouble.” A staggering 67.5% of Jewish Israelis and 76% of Arab Israelis express dissatisfaction with political representation, stating that no party aligns closely with their views.

The backdrop of these findings is critical. Since the October 2023 surprise attack by Hamas, which resulted in 1,200 deaths in southern Israel, the country has faced international scrutiny. Israel’s response—a heavy bombardment and ground operations in Gaza—has led to the deaths of approximately 70,000 Palestinians, according to local health authorities, further damaging Israel’s global image.

As the crisis unfolds, these survey results highlight an urgent need for governmental reform and a renewed commitment to restoring public trust. The situation remains fluid, and all eyes are on how the Israeli government will respond to these challenges in the coming weeks.
