Local Mum’s Cancer Fight Sparks Ice Hockey Charity Game

UPDATE: A local mother’s courageous battle against cancer has ignited an urgent charity initiative, drawing former hockey legends to Nottingham for a special game aimed at raising awareness and funds. Rebecca Combellack, 39, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May and has since undergone rigorous treatment. Her story is inspiring a community to unite for change, with a charity match scheduled for February 8, 2024, at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena.

Rebecca, originally from Cambridge and now residing in Sutton Bonington, considers herself fortunate as her cancer is deemed curable. However, she and her husband Richard Combellack, 43, have realized the profound impact the disease has on those diagnosed. “The effects of breast cancer are devastating,” Rebecca said, highlighting how her treatment has led to early menopause, preventing them from having more children.

The couple is committed to raising awareness about the often-overlooked consequences of breast cancer, as they believe many are unaware of the symptoms and warning signs. “I was never informed about the things to look out for,” Rebecca stated. “We should be sent for a scan, even if the chances are slim. It’s things like that which could save lives.”

In an effort to combat this, Rebecca and Richard have organized a series of fundraising activities, including Rebecca walking an impressive 100 miles in November and Richard shaving his head in solidarity. So far, their efforts have raised an astounding £37,000 for the charities Coppafeel! and BreastCancerNow. The highlight of their campaign will be the charity ice hockey game featuring former Nottingham Panthers players, including David Clarke and Marc Leavers. The event aims to sell 2,000 tickets at the 7,000-capacity arena, and will also include a raffle and a pop-up shop.

The couple’s dedication is fueled by their two children, Matthew, 12, and Sienna, 9, who have been instrumental in supporting their mom throughout this journey. “The kids have been such a huge help,” Rebecca shared, emphasizing the importance of family during tough times.

Richard expressed immense pride in Rebecca’s resilience, stating, “What she’s doing in spite of all of this is just incredible. She is inspiring, keeping our family together while fighting this battle.”

The charity game is set to kick off at 3:30 PM on February 8, and the couple encourages everyone to join them at the Motorpoint Arena. “The support we’ve had has been incredible,” Richard added, thanking the real estate community for their generosity.
