Kennet School Extends Consultation on Year 7 Place Reductions

UPDATE: Kennet School in Thatcham has just extended its consultation regarding a significant reduction in Year 7 places, a move that could alter the educational landscape for local families. The award-winning academy plans to cut its new student intake from 300 to 270 starting in September 2027.

The Equinox Learning Trust cites declining birth rates as a primary factor, asserting that this trend will ultimately diminish demand for secondary school places. This change is crucial for protecting the school’s long-term financial stability.

In addition to reducing intake, Kennet School aims to establish connections with three nearby primary schools—Francis Baily, Spurcroft, and Whitelands Park—to develop them as new ‘feeder’ schools for future admissions. The consultation period, initially set to conclude last month, has now been extended to December 31, 2023. This decision ensures that all community members have ample opportunity to voice their opinions during this busy time of year.

The implications of this consultation extend beyond Kennet School. In neighboring Hampshire, the county council is also seeking public feedback on a proposal to reduce 411 places across 20 schools for the 2027/28 academic year. While some schools will see their capacities decrease, others, like Bishopswood Junior in Tadley, will experience slight increases in admissions.

Parents and residents have until December 26, 2023, to submit their opinions regarding the proposals in Hampshire. Feedback will be reviewed by Hampshire’s Admissions Forum on January 12, 2026, prior to a final decision scheduled for February 24, 2026.

Officials urge community members to share their views by emailing [email protected]. The decisions made in both regions will significantly affect families seeking educational opportunities for their children, highlighting the urgent need for community involvement in these discussions.

As these consultations unfold, the educational futures of many students hang in the balance. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation develops.
