Heavy Rain Set to Disrupt Transport, Worsen Flooding in England

URGENT UPDATE: Heavy rain is poised to disrupt transport and exacerbate flooding across parts of England, as the Met Office issues a yellow rain alert from 12 PM on Thursday until 3 AM on Friday. The warning comes in the wake of the devastating impacts of Storm Chandra, with already saturated ground raising alarms for further flooding.

Residents in London, south-east England, and south-west England should prepare for significant rainfall, which is forecasted to begin this afternoon. Northern Ireland is also set to experience a separate yellow warning on Friday, with “spells of heavy rain” expected to lead to transport disruptions and localized flooding.

As of Thursday morning, there are currently 76 flood warnings where flooding is anticipated, alongside 180 flood alerts indicating potential flooding across England. The Met Office reports that a band of rain will sweep across Cornwall this afternoon, moving northeast through the region before clearing early Friday.

Residents in affected areas should brace for up to 20-25 mm of rain in some locations, with a spokesperson noting, “The likelihood of impacts from these rainfall amounts is higher than normal due to saturated ground and ongoing flooding following Storm Chandra.”

A severe flood warning remains active for the Lower Stour at Iford Bridge Home Park, where residents have been urged to evacuate their properties “as soon as possible.” Floods Minister Emma Hardy expressed her concern, stating, “Flooding is devastating and my thoughts are with the people affected.”

The Environment Agency is mobilizing teams to manage the situation, activating pumps to remove floodwater as soon as river levels permit. In Somerset, an estimated 50 properties have already been impacted by flooding in areas including Ilminster, West Coker, Taunton, Mudford, and West Camel. Emergency services are on-site to assist residents, advising them to prepare for potential overnight evacuations.

Storm Chandra is the latest storm to be recognized by the western Europe storm naming group, which includes the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands. As the situation develops, local authorities are urging residents to stay informed and heed their advice for safety.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: As rainfall intensifies, further updates are anticipated from the Met Office and local authorities. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and adapt to changing conditions.
