Fire at Drogheda Refugee Center Confirmed as Arson Attack

UPDATE: A fire at the International Protection Accommodation Services (Ipas) centre in Drogheda, Co Louth, has been confirmed as an arson attack, prompting urgent investigations by authorities. The blaze, reported around 8 PM on October 31, 2025, forced emergency responders to rescue multiple occupants, including four children, one of whom was a baby.

The fire, which was initially thought to have been caused by fireworks, is now being treated as a deliberate act by unknown individuals. According to a spokesperson from An Garda Síochána, the investigation is underway to identify those responsible for this dangerous incident that endangered lives.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin condemned the attack as “deeply disturbing” and expressed solidarity with the affected families. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan echoed these sentiments, calling it a “terrifying ordeal” for the women and children living in the facility. “This was an extremely dangerous act endangering the lives of the residents,” he stated, highlighting that several victims were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for medical assessment.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after the fire broke out, and a senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the case from the Drogheda Garda Station. Authorities are appealing for witnesses, specifically anyone in the vicinity of Georges Street between 7:30 PM and 8:20 PM on Friday, to come forward with information.

Nick Henderson, Chief Executive of the Irish Refugee Council, described the incident as “appalling,” emphasizing the vulnerability of the families targeted. “Families, children, and babies who have fled war and persecution were put at risk as they tried to rebuild their lives in safety,” he said, commending the Fire Service for their quick response which prevented further tragedy.

Local politician Matt Carthy also condemned the attack, stating, “There can be no excuse for such action, and those involved must be held to account.” He praised the Fire Service for their life-saving efforts, acknowledging the frightening experience for those affected.

As investigations continue, O’Callaghan confirmed that alternative accommodation is being arranged for displaced residents. “A full Garda investigation into this arson attack is underway. There will be serious consequences for those responsible,” he warned.

This incident underscores the need for strong community leadership to combat hate and ensure safety for all residents. As the investigation unfolds, local and national leaders are urging the public to remain vigilant and support those in need during this challenging time.
