Edinburgh’s CODE The Loft has reopened after a significant refurbishment, launching the UK’s first full-height Japanese-style capsule beds. This innovative hostel, located on Rose Street, now features futuristic sleeping pods designed to enhance guest comfort and privacy.
Originally opened in 2014, CODE The Loft was the Scottish capital’s first capsule-style accommodation. Following a temporary closure for renovations, the hostel’s managing director, Andrew Landsburgh, cited inspiration from a research trip to Japan. He emphasized that this redesign aims to elevate the capsule experience, making it more comfortable for visitors.
The new sleeping pods, part of a female-only dormitory that offers views of the city centre, are described as “micro-rooms.” These capsules provide more space than traditional options, incorporating built-in storage, phone holders, charging ports, custom mattresses, and noise-reducing technology. The enhancement of existing dorms and upgrades to bathrooms further complement the overall renovation.
“Visiting Tokyo’s capsule hotels was genuinely transformative,” Landsburgh stated. “We loved the feeling of the full-height capsules; it was like having your own small room—private and peaceful, without sacrificing quality or comfort. This trip made it clear that we could bring something truly special back to Edinburgh.”
In collaboration with Jamie Greig, Head of Projects and Design at CODE, the new capsules were meticulously designed. Greig explained, “Every detail came from real experience, staying in capsules of every shape and size over the years and asking ourselves what we always wished they had. From the acoustic insulation to the storage lighting, to the custom mattress and the extra hooks, it’s all about making travel feel easier, calmer, and more personal.”
The popularity of capsule hotels has surged across major European cities, including London, Paris, and Amsterdam. This trend has contributed to substantial growth within the accommodation sector. Recently, plans were announced for a new 242-pod Japanese-inspired capsule hotel on South St Andrew Street in Edinburgh. Developers aim to transform a six-storey vacant property into a “tech-enabled” capsule hostel, complete with a rooftop bar and restaurant.
As travelers increasingly seek unique and efficient lodging options, CODE The Loft stands at the forefront of this evolving landscape in Edinburgh. With its commitment to combining Japanese design principles with local hospitality, the hostel is poised to attract both domestic and international visitors looking for a modern and comfortable stay in the heart of Scotland’s capital.
