URGENT UPDATE: A food bank distribution point in Dumfries has been abruptly closed due to significant breaches of food hygiene regulations. The First Base Agency’s facility on Buccleuch Street was shut down following a routine inspection by the Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Environmental Health team.
Authorities confirmed that the closure, which occurred earlier today, was initiated after officials uncovered serious hygiene issues during a routine spot check. A spokesperson for the council stated, “Following an inspection by the council’s environmental health team, the First Base Agency food bank at Buccleuch Street was closed due to significant breaches of food hygiene regulations.”
Despite the closure, the First Base Agency reassured the community that its overall service remains largely unaffected. Mark Frankland, a representative of the charity, emphasized that only this particular collection point has been impacted, stating, “Our food parcels are available at 23 collection points in Dumfries and Galloway; this is the only one affected, so services remain as usual during all this.”
Frankland noted that a replacement location in Dumfries is already available for those in need, ensuring that essential services continue without interruption. He expressed disappointment regarding the closure but clarified that the inspection was not prompted by any complaints. “We’re obviously disappointed. At no point was there any complaint; it was just a spot check,” he stated.
The council has indicated that its Community Protection, Environmental Health, and Tackling Poverty and Inequalities teams are collaborating with the food bank to ensure compliance and safety standards are met moving forward.
As this situation develops, the First Base Agency is working diligently to rectify the issues identified, while continuing to support the local community through its food parcel network.
For residents in Dumfries and Galloway, this news is critical as it highlights the ongoing commitment to food safety and hygiene standards within local charitable organizations. Stay tuned for further updates on the reopening of the Buccleuch Street site and any additional measures being taken to support those in need.
