Commonwealth Games: Yaxley Bowler Brett Aims for Second Gold

UPDATE: In a thrilling announcement, Yaxley bowler Brett has secured his spot in the upcoming Commonwealth Games, eagerly pursuing his second gold medal. The competition kicks off with a unique indoor bowls tournament on July 15, 2025, marking the first time this format will take place.

Brett, who previously clinched a gold medal in the triples event at the last Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, will team up with Jamie Walker, who brings valuable experience after winning silver in pairs last time. Sam Tolchard, competing in his fifth Commonwealth Games, will represent the team in singles.

The tournament is highly anticipated after Brett’s recent quarter-final exit in the world indoor singles, where he faced defending champion Jason Banks from Scotland. This setback only intensifies his determination to excel at the Commonwealth Games.

In another exciting development, Hunts Bowls stalwart Bob Morton has been shortlisted for the Bowls England ‘Unsung Hero’ award, with the winner set to be announced during the awards night in Leicester next month. The county’s junior men’s team, having triumphed in the White Rose county championship, is nominated for the Under 25 ‘Team of the Year’.

Additionally, Sam Brugnoli is in the running for the ‘Up and Coming’ category after an impressive season, securing the national under 18 singles title and finishing as runner-up in the British Isles championships.

At the county’s annual meeting, it was confirmed that Steve Wingate will continue as Hunts Bowls president for another year, with no other nominations received. Bob and Angie Morton continue to play vital roles in the county’s administration. Their contributions have been instrumental in the growth of junior bowls, leading to the addition of a second team in the competition this summer.

“We have a lot to be proud of as a small county,” Bob Morton stated, highlighting the strength of their bowling community. He will also lead the senior team in the upcoming Middleton Cup.

On the competitive front, Northants A aims for their third consecutive win in the English Bowling Federation’s Derbyshire Trophy when they face Hunts on Sunday morning. Team captain Simon Law has retained the squad that previously defeated North Cambs, showcasing their confidence and determination.

With the Commonwealth Games and various awards on the horizon, the excitement surrounding bowls in the region is palpable. Fans and players alike are eager to see how these developments unfold. Stay tuned for more updates as the events approach!
