UPDATE: A City of London Police officer, Christopher Trowton, has been sentenced to three years and seven months in prison after pleading guilty to stealing £50,000 during a burglary and harassing his partner. The shocking details emerged during a court hearing at Kingston Crown Court that underscores a serious breach of trust within the police force.
Trowton, 39, committed the burglary on May 19, 2022, while off duty, targeting a home in Hampshire. He resigned from the City of London Police on June 27, 2022, just before the allegations were made public. Following his resignation, he was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on August 10, 2022, and charged two days later.
In addition to the burglary, Trowton faced charges for harassing his partner, further tarnishing his role as a police officer. Detective Superintendent Carly Humphreys, Head of the Professional Standards Department at the City of London Police, expressed grave concerns about Trowton’s actions, stating,
“Trowton was fully aware that his actions were unlawful, morally reprehensible, and put fear into his victims.”
The court sentenced him to 43 months for the burglary and an additional 21 weeks for harassment, with both sentences running concurrently. A restraining order has also been issued against his harassment victim, highlighting the serious nature of his offenses.
This case raises significant questions about the integrity of police officers. Detective Humphreys further asserted that Trowton’s criminal behavior has undoubtedly impacted public trust in policing, emphasizing the need for accountability within law enforcement. An accelerated misconduct hearing will occur at the earliest opportunity, ensuring he is placed on the barred list, preventing him from serving in any police role in the future.
As the situation develops, it remains crucial for communities to stay informed about the actions taken against those in positions of power. The case highlights both the vulnerabilities victims face and the importance of maintaining integrity within law enforcement agencies.
