URGENT UPDATE: Developer Capital&Centric has just submitted a plan to Sheffield City Council for a major new residential project featuring **192 rental flats** on **Fitzwilliam Street**. The **£47 million** development proposes two blocks of five and six stories, designed to meet national space standards amid growing concerns over cramped living conditions in the city.
The proposal comes after persistent feedback from city councillors, including **Martin Phipps**, who highlighted the need for more spacious accommodations and accessible green spaces. Phipps noted that small flats contribute to a high turnover in the city center, as residents seek more livable environments.
The planned development will include a range of apartments, from **studio** to **three-bedroom** units, catering to diverse housing needs. According to the application submitted to the city council, all units will comply with the latest space standards, addressing previous criticisms aimed at new housing projects in Sheffield.
The site for the **‘Fitzwilliam’ development** is bounded by **Fitzwilliam, Egerton, Milton, and Thomas streets**. Currently, part of this location is occupied by **FW Wallace Ltd**, a car repair workshop. In a significant move, Capital&Centric has negotiated to acquire the firm’s lease, with FW Wallace confirming plans to relocate as of **September 2023**.
Tom Wilmot, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, emphasized their commitment to creating a community space that encourages interaction and relaxation. “We want to provide proper greenery to unwind in,” he stated, adding that the surrounding streets will feature trees, benches, local artwork, enhanced lighting, and areas for socializing.
This project follows Capital&Centric’s successful redevelopment of the former **Eye Witness Works** and **Ceylon Works** on **Milton Street**, where they built **97 apartments, duplexes,** and **townhouses**. The firm aims to replicate that success with the Fitzwilliam project, aiming to transform urban living in Sheffield.
