URGENT UPDATE: A significant funding announcement has just been made, with nearly £35 million allocated for cross-community and cross-border initiatives across Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland. This funding, amounting to 40 million euro, comes through the EU Peaceplus programme and aims to strengthen community ties and promote lasting connections.
The funding will provide grants of up to 100,000 euro for each project, allowing local groups to tailor activities that address specific community needs while prioritizing engagement across communities and borders.
Gordon Lyons, the Stormont communities minister, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This programme will support smaller organisations, working at a local level, to make a direct contribution to their communities.” He acknowledged the challenges these groups often face in accessing funding, noting, “Very often these groups face difficulties in accessing funds yet can make a real impact in the areas they serve.”
Minister Dara Calleary for rural and community development applauded the investment, claiming it will not only bolster communities but also create a lasting legacy throughout Northern Ireland and the border counties. “This important investment will strengthen our communities and leave a lasting legacy across Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland,” Calleary stated.
The Change Maker Funding Programme, part of the broader Peaceplus initiative, is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). The entire Peaceplus programme boasts a total value of 1.14 billion euro, co-funded by the EU, the UK and Irish governments, along with the Northern Ireland Executive.
This funding opportunity is critical for local organizations that often struggle to secure financial support, yet play a vital role in enhancing community relations. With applications now open, the ministers encourage all eligible groups to seize this chance to contribute to their communities through diverse activities in sports, arts, heritage, and more.
As this funding rollout begins, communities across Northern Ireland and the border regions are urged to prepare their proposals and take advantage of these financial resources aimed at fostering unity and collaboration.
Stay tuned for further updates as this important initiative unfolds and communities begin to respond to this unprecedented funding opportunity.
