VodafoneThree has announced significant advancements in its initiative to enhance mobile connectivity across the United Kingdom. The company claims to have eradicated 16,500 km² of “not spots,” areas previously lacking adequate mobile coverage, as part of its comprehensive strategy to improve service nationwide.
As part of its ambitious plans, VodafoneThree aims to achieve 99% 5G Standalone population coverage by 2030, with a further target of 99.96% by 2034. The company has pledged an investment of £11 billion to realize these goals. The rollout of this enhanced service is facilitated through the deployment of ‘Multi Operator Core Network’ (MOCN) technology across over 8,000 sites throughout the UK. This advancement allows all Vodafone and Three customers to access the best available coverage without incurring additional costs.
Economic Impact of Improved Connectivity
New research commissioned by VodafoneThree highlights the substantial economic benefits that improved mobile connectivity could yield for UK businesses and the broader economy. The study suggests that enhancing mobile coverage could generate a £6.6 billion annual boost to the UK economy over the next decade, potentially leading to the establishment of tens of thousands of new businesses.
The findings are based on a survey of 2,000 individuals, including both current and aspiring business owners. The research revealed that a significant barrier for small businesses in the UK is poor mobile signal quality. Nearly 62% of potential entrepreneurs indicated that unreliable connectivity has discouraged them from starting a business in their local areas. Furthermore, 33% believe that better mobile signal would enhance the appeal of their regions for new business ventures, while 26% expressed that improved connectivity would increase their likelihood of launching a company nearby.
“When connectivity improves, entrepreneurship follows,” stated Nick Gliddon, Business Director at VodafoneThree. He emphasized the importance of reliable infrastructure, noting that strong connectivity enables start-ups to attract customers, build their reputations, and grow sustainably.
Government Support for Enhanced Connectivity
The UK government has also recognized the critical role of mobile connectivity in fostering economic growth. Liz Lloyd, the Telecoms Minister, commented, “Access to high quality, reliable mobile connectivity is essential for businesses and driving growth.” She underscored that VodafoneThree’s investment, resulting from its merger, and its efforts to eliminate not spots will contribute significantly to improved coverage across the UK. The government aims for all populated areas to have access to higher-quality standalone 5G by 2030.
With these initiatives, VodafoneThree is positioning itself as a leader in the telecommunications sector, focusing on bridging the connectivity gap across the UK. The anticipated economic benefits and increased business opportunities underscore the vital link between mobile infrastructure and entrepreneurial success.
