Sandbar Secures $13M to Launch Stream, a Voice-Controlled Smart Ring

Sandbar, a startup founded by former Meta engineers, has successfully raised $13 million in funding to launch its innovative voice-controlled smart ring, named Stream. This cutting-edge device aims to revolutionize how individuals interact with technology by making communication and productivity more intuitive and personal.

Transforming Interaction with Technology

Stream is designed to be worn on the dominant index finger and features built-in microphones and a touchpad, allowing users to engage with technology seamlessly. Dubbed “a mouse for voice,” the ring is capable of capturing notes, interacting with digital assistants, and controlling media through simple gestures. By only activating when the touchpad is pressed, Stream ensures that user privacy is maintained, addressing growing concerns regarding constant listening in wearable devices.

During a demonstration, CEO Mina Fahmi showcased how users can quietly record ideas by pressing and holding the touchpad. The device accurately transcribes even whispered thoughts into its companion iOS app, offering a glimpse into its potential for capturing spontaneous ideas. This minimalist activation method reflects a significant shift in consumer demand for privacy in wearable technology.

A Personal Approach to Technology

Fahmi, who has extensive experience in human-computer interfaces from previous roles at Kernel and Magic Leap, created Stream to solve his own challenges with journaling. He recognized that traditional apps often act as barriers to spontaneous thought. Stream’s hardware listens only when prompted, fostering a more natural interaction.

The device’s AI companion engages users in a conversational manner, assisting with note refinement, task creation, and organizing reflections. With an intuitive pinch-to-zoom navigation feature, users can easily review discussions and notes accumulated over days or weeks. The assistant’s voice is even tailored to sound slightly reminiscent of the user’s own, enhancing the personal connection.

For moments requiring discretion, users can opt for headphones to facilitate quiet exchanges, while haptic vibrations confirm recorded inputs. Whether jotting down ideas during a morning walk or managing a grocery list while commuting, Stream is designed for everyday versatility.

Stream also serves as a music controller, making it practical for users on the go. The pricing for the silver model starts at $249, while the gold version is priced at $299. Preorders are currently open, with shipping expected in summer 2024. Additionally, a Pro subscription tier will offer extended features for $10 per month, following a three-month free trial.

With significant backing from notable investors such as True Ventures, Upfront Ventures, and Betaworks, Sandbar is positioned to establish a strong presence in the wearable technology market. Fahmi emphasizes the importance of data control, encryption across all subscription tiers, and easy exports to popular applications like Notion.

As the demand for innovative, user-friendly technology continues to rise, Sandbar’s Stream could represent a pivotal advancement in how individuals capture and interact with their thoughts in an increasingly digital world.
