New £6.7 Million Dual Carriageway Boosts Sunderland’s Connectivity

A new dual carriageway worth £6.7 million has been completed in Sunderland, significantly enhancing transport links in the area. Officially finished just in time for Christmas 2023, the upgraded A1290 is designed to alleviate congestion and improve travel times for both commuters and businesses.

With the construction undertaken by the private firm ESH Group, the project involved transforming 1,550 metres of the A1290 to better serve the new International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP). This major infrastructure improvement includes upgraded junctions, enhanced pedestrian access, and improved cycling facilities.

The aims of the dual carriageway extension are clear: to reduce traffic congestion, enhance journey efficiency, and provide safer, sustainable travel options. Steven Garrigan, Divisional Director at ESH Construction, emphasized the significance of the project: “Delivering the A1290 Dualling Works has been a vital part of improving the region’s strategic road network and supporting future growth at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park.”

The IAMP is poised to become a leading hub for high-tech manufacturing and has already attracted notable companies, including car manufacturer Nissan. ESH estimates that the new road could generate over 7,000 jobs across Sunderland and South Tyneside in the next decade, a significant boost for the local economy.

Strategic Importance of the A1290 Upgrade

The completion of the A1290 dual carriageway marks a significant milestone in the development of the IAMP. According to Cllr Kevin Johnston, portfolio holder for housing, regeneration, and business at Sunderland City Council, this infrastructure upgrade is essential for future development. “Since the first building opened its doors in 2019, we’ve seen global firms such as Falco, SNOP, Jatco, and AESC all make IAMP their home,” he stated. “The completion of these works will pave the way for further development as we seek to establish it as one of the UK’s most advanced manufacturing hubs.”

As Sunderland embraces this new infrastructure, the benefits extend beyond improved travel. Community and business leaders anticipate that the dual carriageway will not only facilitate local traffic but also attract further investment, enhancing the region’s economic landscape.

The A1290 improvement demonstrates how infrastructure projects can stimulate growth and connectivity, marking a promising future for Sunderland and its surrounding areas. Plans are already in place to leverage this development, ensuring the city remains a competitive player in the ever-evolving manufacturing sector.

In summary, Sunderland’s new dual carriageway not only represents a significant financial investment but also reflects a broader commitment to enhancing the region’s infrastructure and supporting economic development.
