Leica has unveiled the Q3 Monochrom, a full-frame mirrorless camera specifically designed for black-and-white photography, priced at $7,790 USD. This release coincides with the company’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of the iconic Leica I, marking a significant milestone in its long history. The Q3 Monochrom represents a notable advancement within Leica’s compact Q family of cameras.
As the second monochrome model in the Q series, the Q3 Monochrom boasts a 60 MP monochrome sensor that incorporates Triple Resolution Technology. This innovation allows users to capture images at three different resolutions: 60, 36, or 18 MP. By omitting color filters, the sensor focuses solely on capturing brightness, resulting in images that exhibit exceptional sharpness, tonal depth, and an expansive dynamic range.
Along with its impressive sensor, the camera features a fixed Summilux 28 f/1.7 ASPH. lens, which enhances its ability to produce low-noise images rich in detail. This combination is particularly effective in various lighting conditions, thanks to an extensive ISO range of 100 to 200,000 and the capability to record video at resolutions up to 8K.
The design of the Q3 Monochrom adheres to Leica’s minimalist philosophy. It features an all-metal body in a sleek black finish, understated engravings, and notably, the absence of the traditional red Leica logo. A refined leatherette covering enhances its tactile appeal. Modern usability is ensured with a 5.76 MP OLED viewfinder, a hybrid autofocus system, and a tilting touch display. Additionally, the Q3 Monochrom supports macro photography with a minimum focusing distance of 17 cm, as well as digital zoom capabilities ranging from 28 to 90 mm. The camera is also rated IP52, meaning it is resistant to dust and splashes.
Connectivity options are comprehensive, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB-C, and Micro HDMI, allowing for seamless integration with the Leica FOTOS app. This enhances the user experience and facilitates quick sharing of images.
Beyond its technical specifications, the Q3 Monochrom also pioneers the use of Content Credentials technology. This feature introduces digital signatures that comply with the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), providing a means for tamper-proof verification of images—a significant step towards ensuring authenticity in digital photography.
To further enhance personalization, Leica offers optional accessories such as a wireless charging handgrip, a red filter, and various carrying straps.
The Q3 Monochrom is now available globally through Leica’s distribution channels. With its impressive blend of technology and design, it positions itself as a powerful tool for photographers dedicated to the art of black-and-white imagery.
