Forecasters predict that heavy snowfall may disrupt travel, particularly in higher elevations, on Saturday evening and into Sunday morning. Icy patches are anticipated on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, posing a risk to drivers and pedestrians alike. By Sunday, the weather warnings will mainly focus on northern England and Scotland, lasting until 10:00 a.m.

In light of these treacherous conditions, motorists are advised to carry a basic winter car kit to ensure safety in case of being stranded or delayed. Experts from the RAC recommend including an empty fuel can in the kit. This crucial emergency tool allows drivers to transport fuel safely from a petrol station if they run out. Carrying a full can is not advisable due to the risk of leaking hazardous, flammable fumes.
“In an ideal world, you would plan your journey to include fuel stops, but sometimes things don’t go to plan. If you find yourself without fuel, it’s essential to have an empty fuel can available,”
said a representative from the RAC while speaking to the Met Office.
In addition to the fuel can, drivers should consider packing other essential items, such as food, warm clothing, and a phone charger. These supplies can help keep individuals warm and enable them to call for help if needed. The RAC also suggests considering snow socks—high-grip fabric covers fitted over a car’s driven wheels—as an additional precaution if snowfall is anticipated.
