Thiago Silva, at the age of 41, is not ready to relinquish his dream of representing Brazil in the upcoming 2026 World Cup. The veteran defender, who captained the national team during the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, last donned the Brazilian jersey during their quarterfinal exit in Qatar, where they were defeated by penalties.
Returning to Fluminense after a stint with Chelsea in 2024, Silva has remained a critical player for the club. He acknowledged that he is nearing the end of his professional football career but expressed his aspirations in an interview with France Football. “Can you imagine if I end my career with a World Cup title? It would be the absolute dream and the perfect moment to stop,” he stated.
Having made 113 appearances for Brazil and netted seven goals, Silva’s international accolades include winning the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013 and the Copa América in 2019. His current contract with Fluminense is set to expire in June 2026, coinciding with the World Cup.
Strategic Signing for Future Aspirations
Silva revealed that his decision to extend his contract with Fluminense until 2026 was somewhat strategic. “Yes, it was somewhat premeditated,” he remarked, indicating his intent to remain competitive and available for national selection. Although he has not been called up to the Brazilian squad since 2022, he remains optimistic. “I thought it wasn’t impossible. That’s why I signed two years with Fluminense, to try and play in the World Cup,” he added.
Brazil’s national team, now under the management of Carlo Ancelotti, is actively preparing to reclaim their status as world champions. The last time Brazil lifted the World Cup trophy was in 2002, and their most recent close attempt came in 2014, when they finished in fourth place as hosts of the tournament.
The forthcoming World Cup in 2026 presents a significant opportunity for Silva to leave an indelible mark on his storied career. As he trains with Fluminense and remains focused on his performance, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Silva can add a World Cup title to his illustrious resume.
