T.J. Watt Returns to Practice Following Lung Injury Recovery

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt returned to practice on December 27, 2023, for the first time since suffering a partially punctured lung during a dry needling treatment. After undergoing reparative surgery, Watt participated in individual drills but was listed as a limited participant. His return comes just two weeks after missing two games, marking a significant step in his recovery.

Watt’s teammates expressed enthusiasm about his presence. Outside linebacker Alex Highsmith remarked, “It’s awesome to have him out there. Just seeing him back on the field with us, he’s getting better every single day.” Highsmith highlighted Watt’s leadership, emphasizing its importance for the team as they prepare for crucial games ahead.

During practice, Watt focused on cardio exercises with the defensive line instead of engaging in pass rush drills that would require more intensive movements. This cautious approach indicates Watt’s careful management of his recovery process.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers also praised Watt’s return, stating, “T.J.’s one of our leaders, so I love having him around. Not sure what his status is going to be, but just his presence is good for our team.” This sentiment reflects the high regard in which Watt is held among his peers, underscoring his impact on the squad.

Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on December 26, indicating that Watt’s status for the upcoming game against Cleveland remains uncertain. This game is pivotal, as the Steelers could clinch the AFC North title and secure a playoff berth. Tomlin expressed confidence in Watt’s recovery, noting, “That’s a fair estimation, but again, I’ll let him speak in terms of his medical.”

Tomlin further explained his cautiousness regarding discussing Watt’s medical details, stating, “To talk about injury is one thing. To talk about medical is something else. That’s one of the reasons why I’ve been a little bit hesitant.” He anticipates Watt will provide updates on his condition soon.

In addition to Watt’s return, fellow pass rusher Nick Herbig also participated in practice after sitting out the previous game against the Lions due to a hamstring injury. Herbig’s involvement adds depth to the Steelers’ defense as they approach the critical matchup against Cleveland.

The Steelers continue to navigate their season with aspirations of securing a favorable playoff position, and Watt’s return adds a crucial element to their strategy as they look to capitalize on their opportunities.
