Montenegro’s Milatović Advocates for EU Membership Progress

Montenegro’s President, Jakov Milatović, emphasized the nation’s commitment to advancing its European Union membership during a recent meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Đuro Kalas. The discussion, which focused on EU enlargement, geopolitical challenges, and the dynamics of accession, highlighted Montenegro’s position as the leading candidate for EU membership.

Milatović pointed out that Montenegro has successfully closed 13 chapters in the EU accession process. He expressed a desire to accelerate this progress by closing the remaining chapters by the end of the year. “Special focus must be on chapters 23 and 24,” stated Milatović, stressing the need for tangible, measurable reforms in the areas of rule of law as well as justice, freedom, and security.

The President extended an invitation to Kalas to visit Montenegro ahead of the upcoming EU-Western Balkans Summit. This visit would serve to further engage with the EU representatives and showcase Montenegro’s ongoing commitment to reforms essential for EU integration.

Milatović concluded by asserting that the essence, rather than the form, would be the measure of Montenegro’s success in this endeavor. The emphasis on substantial reforms underscores Montenegro’s determination to meet the EU’s requirements and address any lingering geopolitical challenges that may impact the accession process.

As Montenegro continues to navigate its path toward EU membership, the government remains focused on implementing reforms that align with European standards. The anticipation surrounding the EU-Western Balkans Summit reflects the significant importance of these discussions for the future of Montenegro and the broader region.
