Manchester City has announced plans to appeal a ruling that bars defender Marc Guéhi from participating in the upcoming Carabao Cup final against Arsenal. Manager Pep Guardiola revealed the club’s intention to seek special permission from the English Football League (EFL) for Guéhi to play in the match scheduled for March 22, 2024.
City secured their place in the final after a decisive victory over Newcastle United. However, Guéhi’s eligibility has become a contentious issue due to a registration rule. Guardiola expressed confusion over the regulation that prevents Guéhi from playing because he was not registered prior to the first leg of the semifinal against Newcastle on January 13.
Guardiola emphasized that the situation is difficult to comprehend, particularly given that Antoine Semenyo, who joined City from Bournemouth before the semifinal first leg, is eligible to play. “Hopefully we can convince the Carabao Cup that Marc can play in the final,” Guardiola stated. “I don’t understand why he cannot play the final. We pay his salary; he is our player.”
Despite acknowledging the slim chances of a successful appeal, Guardiola urged club officials to pursue the matter. He highlighted the inconsistency of the rules, pointing out that Guéhi, who has already played two matches for his new club, should be allowed to participate in the final.
The upcoming final holds significant importance for Manchester City, as they aim to secure another trophy in their pursuit of domestic success. The club’s appeal will focus on the unique circumstances surrounding Guéhi’s registration and the potential impact of his absence on the team’s performance at Wembley Stadium.
As the situation develops, City fans and stakeholders alike are keenly awaiting the EFL’s response to the club’s request, which could have implications for their chances in the final against Arsenal.
