Holywell Town achieved a significant victory, defeating Mold Alex 2-0, which bolsters their aspirations for promotion in the Cymru North league. This win comes as a welcome response after their recent exit from the Cymru North Cup against Airbus a week prior.
In a post-match statement, Holywell coach Mark Connolly expressed the team’s disappointment with the cup result but noted positive aspects of their performance. “There were good spells in our performance, and the red card with 25 minutes to go made it very difficult for us to progress in the competition,” he said. Connolly highlighted the importance of maintaining focus, discipline, and effort in the league, stating, “These are the games where effort, concentration, and desire are just as important as quality.”
The match against Mold Alex saw both goals scored in the second half. Jamie Breese played a crucial role by assisting Joe Sullivan, who netted the opener in the 52nd minute. The game shifted further in Holywell’s favor when Mold’s Rhys Nash received a red card with 20 minutes remaining. This opened the door for Ilan ap Gareth to assist Craig Lindfield, who secured the second goal in the 81st minute.
In another match, Buckley Town faced a tough loss, going down 2-1 to Rhyl 1879. Buckley, desperate for their first league win in over a month, began on a high note with Max Moore setting up Brad Barnes for a goal just five minutes into the game. However, Ben Lightfoot equalized for Rhyl before the half-time whistle, and Jack Parry scored the winning goal in the 57th minute.
The results from these matches underscore the competitive nature of the Cymru North league as teams vie for position and promotion. Holywell Town’s performance not only brings them closer to their goal but also highlights the resilience of the squad as they aim to bounce back from setbacks.
