Former German international footballer Sebastian Hertner died tragically on March 10, 2024, after falling from a chairlift at the Savin Kuk ski resort near the town of Zabljak in Montenegro. The 34-year-old’s accident occurred while his wife witnessed the horrifying incident, as he plunged approximately 70 metres to the ground.
Reports indicate that a double chairlift detached from its cable, resulting in Hertner’s fall. Emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene. His 30-year-old wife, who remained trapped in the chairlift, was rescued but sustained a broken leg. At least three other tourists were left suspended in their chairs for several hours before being safely brought down by rescue teams.
Hertner had a notable professional career in Germany, representing clubs such as 1860 Munich, Erzgebirge Aue, and Darmstadt in the second division. He also captained ETSV Hamburg in the Oberliga, the fifth tier of German football.

Investigation Launched into Accident
In the wake of the accident, Montenegrin authorities ordered an immediate shutdown of the chairlift. Prosecutors have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. By March 11, 2024, officials had not confirmed an official cause but announced that a thorough technical inspection of the lift would be conducted. Mayor of Zabljak, Rados Zugic, stated, “We insist on a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine those responsible.”
Despite the investigation, Serbian news outlet Blic reported that the ski lift resumed operations the day following the incident. The circumstances surrounding the accident have raised concerns among the public and skiing community, highlighting the need for stringent safety measures in ski resorts.
