Cowboys Release Trevon Diggs After Flight Dispute and Rehab Issues

The Dallas Cowboys have officially released cornerback Trevon Diggs, a decision influenced by both a flight dispute and ongoing concerns related to his rehabilitation. Coach Brian Schottenheimer clarified that while Diggs’ choice to skip the team flight home from Washington, D.C., on December 25, 2023, was a contributing factor, it was not the sole reason for his release.

In a press conference following the Cowboys’ 30-23 victory, Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of team protocols, stating, “We have a protocol that we go through, and the process was not followed.” He explained that all players are expected to travel together unless there is a family emergency. After the game, Diggs requested to remain in the area to be with family, but his request was denied, leading him to make the decision to skip the flight.

Schottenheimer indicated that several players made similar requests to return home separately but were all denied. He reiterated that adherence to team protocols is critical for maintaining a strong team culture.

The situation was further complicated by Diggs’ rehabilitation approach. After undergoing surgery on his left knee, Diggs chose to conduct his recovery in South Florida, which prompted the Cowboys to enforce a $500,000 de-escalator clause in his base salary due to non-compliance with team expectations. Frustrations mounted after his performance in 2023, particularly following a torn anterior cruciate ligament and subsequent questions about the defensive scheme implemented by defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.

Diggs faced additional challenges this season, including a concussion resulting from an at-home accident. He was placed on injured reserve and was only elevated to the 53-man roster after the practice window concluded. Schottenheimer remarked that Diggs needed to demonstrate full compliance with team standards before returning to play.

In addressing the release, Schottenheimer expressed a personal fondness for Diggs, stating, “I want what’s best for him… I thought he was trying to do better, and I wish him nothing but the best.” He noted that although the decision was difficult, it stemmed from a broader commitment to team cohesion.

Diggs is now available to be claimed off waivers by other teams, with the process set to take place later on Wednesday. Should no team claim him, he will enter free agency. Unlike the earlier trade of Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, Schottenheimer opted to discuss this release with only a select number of players rather than the entire team.

He reassured players that his door is always open for discussions about the decision. “If they have questions or concerns, I would love to talk about it,” he said. Schottenheimer concluded by reiterating the importance of building a connected and resilient team, underscoring that the decision to release Diggs was multi-faceted and not solely based on the flight incident.
