Barcelona is actively pursuing a move for defender Pau Torres as the club prioritizes securing a left-sided centre-back for the upcoming summer transfer window. According to multiple sources, including ESPN, the departure of a key defender earlier this year has prompted coach Hansi Flick to seek reinforcements in the backline.
The current defensive options for Barcelona include Ronald Araujo, Eric Garcia, and Jordi Alba, but Flick has struggled to establish a consistent pairing this season. Araujo is currently taking a mental health break, while Garcia has been deployed in midfield, leading Flick to experiment with Alba in a centre-back role. This unconventional approach allows the team to play out from the back effectively, utilizing a left-footed player to enhance their possession game.
Barcelona’s search for a long-term partner for Andreas Christensen, their most-utilized centre-back this season, has led them to Torres. The 26-year-old defender, known for his aerial ability and ball-handling skills, has been on the club’s radar since his days at Villarreal. He joined Aston Villa in 2023 for approximately €40 million (around $47 million), making negotiations challenging, especially since he is a vital part of Unai Emery‘s squad.
Despite the tough competition, Torres is reportedly open to considering a return to Spain if Barcelona makes a serious offer. His contract with Aston Villa runs until 2028, and Barcelona recognizes that acquiring him will not be straightforward, as he plays a significant role in Villa’s plans.
Exploring Other Options
While Torres is a primary target, Barcelona is also exploring additional options to fortify their defence, having conceded 31 goals in 23 matches across all competitions this season. Another defender on their radar is Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund. Barcelona has been tracking Schlotterbeck since his breakthrough at SC Freiburg, and he has a contract with Dortmund until 2027. Should he not renew, he could be available for a reduced fee next summer.
Financial constraints remain a critical factor in Barcelona’s transfer strategy. The club must comply with LaLiga‘s financial fair play regulations, which will influence any potential signings. The departures of high earners like Christensen and Robert Lewandowski, both of whom are out of contract at the end of the season, could create room for new acquisitions.
As of now, no final decisions have been made regarding the futures of Christensen or Lewandowski beyond the current campaign. Should Christensen depart, it would further intensify Barcelona’s need to invest in a new centre-back, making their pursuit of Torres and other defenders even more crucial as they look to strengthen their defensive line for the future.
