Moray Libraries Launch Powerful Research Tools for Residents

Moray Council libraries have introduced two significant research tools aimed at enhancing the resources available to all library members. As of March 2024, users can now access the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, expanding their ability to explore historical records and conduct genealogical research.

The British Newspaper Archive allows library users to delve into millions of newspaper articles from around the globe. Accessible at local libraries, this resource offers free searches and the ability to view historical newspapers with a valid library membership card. The comprehensive archive includes a variety of publications, making it a valuable tool for anyone interested in historical events.

In addition, the Ancestry Library Edition enables users to trace their family history by providing access to UK records for births, deaths, marriages, military service, and more. This includes vital records such as UK census records, parish records, and immigration and emigration data. The availability of these resources in all Moray libraries opens up new avenues for individuals looking to uncover their ancestry.

Library computers are available for use at no cost, although it is advisable to book in advance to ensure access. Alternatively, patrons can connect to the public Wi-Fi and utilize these resources on their personal devices, making research more convenient than ever.

Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed her enthusiasm about the new digital offerings. She stated, “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community. Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”

The introduction of these research tools reflects Moray Council’s commitment to enhancing community resources and supporting lifelong learning. With the addition of the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, residents now have powerful tools at their disposal to explore both personal and historical narratives.
