An institute at Aberystwyth University has been designated as a founding member of the newly established National Research Organisations Group, an alliance comprising 35 leading UK research agencies and institutes. The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), located in Gogerddan, Wales, stands as the only representative from Wales within this prestigious group.
The National Research Organisations Group aims to enhance scientific advancement for the benefit of communities, economies, and national priorities. Serving as a reliable partner for government, academia, and industry, the group is poised to provide authoritative insights on science, policy, and research investment. It will also play a crucial role in informing decisions aligned with national objectives, including economic growth, security, and resilience, while actively supporting the UK’s environmental goals and progress towards net zero.
IBERS’ Role and Contributions
Professor Iain Donnison, Head of IBERS, expressed enthusiasm about the launch of the National Research Organisations Group. He stated, “We warmly welcome the launch of the National Research Organisations Group and are delighted that IBERS is one of the founding members. As a national capability in grassland and plant breeding science, we are well placed to support national food security as well as contributing to UK priorities for advancing scientific discovery to accelerate innovation and support clean economic growth.”
The formation of this group comes at a pivotal moment when collaboration among research institutes is essential for addressing the complex challenges faced by society. The focus on food security, environmental sustainability, and scientific innovation aligns with the UK’s broader strategic goals.
Government Support for Research Initiatives
The UK Government has underscored the significance of research and development in fostering a prosperous future. Lord Vallance, the UK Government Science Minister, commented, “Research and Development is essential to building a better Britain. From new treatments for cancer to breakthroughs in clean energy or developing the computers of the future, the path to a stronger economy and society will be dependent on science and innovation.”
He emphasized the importance of research institutes collaborating effectively. “There has never been a better time for the UK’s research institutes and public research bodies to pull together. By aligning their capabilities to deliver maximum impact, the NRO Group will be a key part of our efforts to ensure that science and technology benefits everyone.”
The establishment of the National Research Organisations Group signifies a significant step towards enhancing the UK’s research landscape. Through this collaboration, members aim to leverage their unique strengths to tackle pressing issues and drive forward the agenda for scientific excellence and innovation.
