Former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has called for enhanced diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the United States following rising tensions over remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump. In a statement on his verified X account on October 15, 2023, Kwankwaso expressed concern regarding Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue.
Kwankwaso highlighted that the insecurity faced by Nigeria transcends religious, ethnic, and political boundaries. He stated, “It is important to emphasize that our country is a sovereign nation whose people face different threats from outlaws across the country. The insecurity we face does not distinguish based on religion, ethnic, or political beliefs.”
Call for Constructive Solutions
In his remarks, Kwankwaso urged the United States to transition from a stance of threats to one of constructive engagement. He believes that technological and intelligence collaboration would provide the most effective solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges. “The United States should assist the Nigerian authorities with better cutting-edge technology to tackle these problems, rather than posing a threat that could further polarize our country,” he said.
Kwankwaso suggested that the Nigerian government appoint special envoys from its distinguished diplomats to foster dialogue with American officials. He also recommended the appointment of permanent ambassadors to represent Nigeria’s interests on the international stage, reinforcing the importance of diplomatic representation.
Furthermore, he called on Nigerians to rise above political and religious divides in the face of external pressures. “To my fellow countrymen, this is an important moment where we should emphasize unity of belonging over division,” Kwankwaso stated.
His comments come at a time when Nigeria grapples with numerous security challenges, including insurgency and banditry, which have significantly impacted daily life and economic stability. By advocating for a united front, Kwankwaso aims to strengthen Nigeria’s position in international discussions and enhance its security framework through collaboration rather than confrontation.
As the dialogue between Nigeria and the U.S. evolves, Kwankwaso’s emphasis on unity and constructive engagement may play a critical role in shaping future interactions between the two nations.
