GAA President Jarlath Burns Criticizes TUV’s Casement Park Motion

The President of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), Jarlath Burns, has expressed strong disapproval of a motion put forth by the Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) party regarding the future of the currently derelict Casement Park in West Belfast. The TUV’s proposal calls for profits from non-GAA events at the stadium to be redirected to the public purse. Burns described the motion as “pointless and petty,” emphasizing the negative impact it could have on fundraising efforts within the community.

Burns highlighted his long-standing commitment to the redevelopment of Casement Park, stating that he could “write a book” about the challenges surrounding the stadium’s future. He reassured stakeholders that allocated funds will be utilized to rebuild the historic venue, which once served as the home for Antrim and Ulster GAA. “We were sitting back watching the debate, thinking: ‘What are they at?’” Burns remarked, pointing to the lack of understanding among some political figures regarding the significance of GAA events to the local community.

The TUV MLA proposed a “clawback mechanism” during a session at Stormont last month, aiming to recover profits from concerts and other non-GAA activities held at the stadium. Burns noted that the revenue generated from such events would be crucial in covering the ongoing operational costs of Casement Park. He voiced his disappointment over the TUV’s stance, suggesting it reflects a broader societal issue in Northern Ireland.

At a recent GAA Congress held on March 2, 2024, Burns stated, “It gives you a little glimpse of the incredibly fraught environment Ulster GAA, Antrim GAA, and the people behind the Casement Park project have been operating in.” He emphasized that the delays and obstacles faced are not a reflection of the commitment of those working to revitalize the stadium.

Despite the challenges, Burns reaffirmed the GAA’s dedication to establishing a new home for the organization in Ireland’s second city. The commitment to Casement Park remains resolute, with Burns insisting, “There will be a Casement Park.”
