Tributes have poured in for Derek Brownlie, a beloved figure in East Kilbride, who passed away on October 15, 2023, after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer. He was 59 years old and died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief from friends and members of the East Kilbride YM, the town’s oldest football club, where he dedicated over four decades of his life.
Derek’s commitment to the club began as a player at age 18, where he excelled as a defender and later served as captain. His extensive involvement included playing for various teams and volunteering behind the scenes to improve the club’s facilities at Kirktonholme. He was also a well-known community figure, having been involved with the Boys’ Brigade and founding the Kilbryde Hike in 1969.
A Legacy of Kindness and Community Service
His brother, Tommy Brownlie, expressed profound sadness, stating, “We are just devastated and so shocked. Nobody had a bad word to say about him. Everybody that met him and knew him loved him. He was just one of life’s good guys.” Derek’s contributions to the YM were significant; he was not only a talented player but also a mentor to younger athletes and a friend to many.
Born and raised in East Kilbride, Derek attended Claremont High School and began his career as a mechanical inspector at Rolls-Royce after completing his apprenticeship at TL Precision. He worked there for over 40 years, primarily focusing on V2500 engine inspection. Following his redundancy in 2020, he devoted his time to family and community service.
Derek’s battle with cancer was fraught with challenges, including a shoulder replacement and paralysis in the later stages. Despite these hardships, he remained resilient, showcasing an unwavering spirit through his love for football. He was especially proud to walk his daughter Rebecca down the aisle at her wedding last September, a moment he cherished deeply.
Memorials and Community Tributes
In honor of Derek’s memory, East Kilbride YM will observe a minute’s silence at all games this weekend, including the match against West Park United in the West of Scotland League Fourth Division on October 21, 2023. A statement released by the club expressed their sorrow over his passing, stating, “Derek fought his illness several times over many years and he never changed from being an easy-going, lovely guy who always looked out for others first and foremost.”
Social media has become a platform for friends and acquaintances to share their condolences and memories. YM striker Ross McDonagh, who played alongside Derek, described him as “one of a kind” and “my best mate.” Other tributes highlighted his kindness and the positive impact he had on young people through his work with the Boys’ Brigade.
Derek Brownlie’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched, both on and off the football field. His contributions to East Kilbride YM and the wider community reflect a life dedicated to service, camaraderie, and unwavering support for others.
